Originally presumably of Balkan origin, at present from SW Poland, Austria and Hungary to Greece and Turkey.
Type locality: Rep. Makedonija: Ohrid.
Habitat:
Wide ecological tolerance; often occurs en masse; inhabits mainly beech and mixed forests, less often coniferous woodland, mountain meadows, margins of streams, rock rubble. Up to 2100 m in Greece and Bulgaria. Also as a synanthrope.
While D. reticulatum inhabits open land and is found most at forest margins, D. turcicum is a woodland species and is much less found in open habitats. Where both species occur together, D. reticulatum is a decided synanthrope, while D. turcicum prefers less human-disturbed habitats. .
