General description:
Limacus consists of 7-8 species of slug (Schileyko 2003).
Behaviour:
Limacus species are relatively fast and active (Wiktor 1983).
Morphology:
External: Medium, slender slugs; often two dark stripes on mantle; keel at end of tail; pneumostome post-medial on mantle; clear mucus.
Internal: long rectal caecum; penis club-shaped and with flagellum on end (Wiktor et al. 2000; Schileyko 2003; Herbert 2010).
Species may be distinguished by penial flagellum shape and radula shape (Chichester & Getz 1973).
Size:
To 65 mm long alive; contracted body to 40 mm long (Wiktor et al. 2000; Schileyko 2003; Herbert 2010).
Distribution:
Europe and N Africa (Wiktor et al. 2000).
Habitat:
Most species occur in the mountains; on trees, rocks (Wiktor 1983).
Trophic strategy:
Lichen (Wiktor 1983), algae.
