Athoracophorus Gould, 1852
Six to seven species are in this New Zealand genus of athoracophorid slug (Schileyko 2007).
External: Body tapers toward posterior; mantle small and triangular, touching perinotum; posterior edge of mantle is straight; head shield triangular and does not touch mantle; thin skin without large papillae; up to 15 lateral grooves on each side of dorsum; anus near perinotum (Burton 1980; Schileyko 2007).
Internal: Flat internal shell somewhat reduced to grains; talon with two unevenly-sized chambers; thin vas deferens sometimes with a wider, muscular part near attachment point to penis, and tubercles inside; sphincter between vas deferens and penis; long, muscular penis often with a bend; penis narrowing toward apex (and attachment point of vas deferens and retractor muscle); papillose interior of penis (Schileyko 2007).
Up to 45 mm long, 13.7 mm wide (Schileyko 2007).
New Zealand and nearby islands (Beesley et al. 1998).
