Milax nigricans (Schulz, 1836)
Milax gagates.
External: Stout-bodied; small mantle notched at its posterior edge; black, dark gray, or greenish body with blotchy, paler sides; strong keel; coarse skin wrinkles; gray-cream sole (Wiktor 1987, 1996).
Internal: Genitalia similar to those of M. gagates. Vas deferens longer than penis+epiphallus; bulbous apex of epiphallus; penis ovate; penial retractor muscle on epiphallus or between epiphallus and penis; papilla in penis, and folds in interior base of penis; blunt stimulator with large spines or rows of papillae in the atrium; spermatophore covered with spines throughout (Kerney & Cameron 1979; Wiktor 1987, 1996).
Resembles other species of Milacidae and must be distinguished through internal anatomy (stimulator shape and its papillae, spermatophore shape) (Abbes et al. 2010). Differs from M. gagates b/c genital stimulator is wider with coarser papillae at its base (Rodriguez & Hermida 1993).
To 65 mm long, 13 mm wide, mantle 17 mm long (Wiktor 1996).
Its range may be confused with that of M. gagates, which it resembles (Wiktor 1996).
Mediterranean (Kerney & Cameron 1979). Tunisia, Morocco, Malta, Egypt, Italy (Corsica, Majorca, mainland), France, UK, Spain (Wiktor 1996).
Synanthropic; agricultural land, gardens (Wiktor 1996; Abbes et al. 2010).
