Philomycus virginicus Hubricht, 1953
Philomycus bisdosus.
External: One thick central longitudinal band on the mid-dorsum and a thinner band low along each side, with chevrons crossing over (Burch 1962); brown mantle patterns (Hubricht 1953).
Internal: Vas deferens of constant width throughout; vas deferens circles apex of penis; penis base width is 1/3 length, and tapers toward vas deferens; internal penis - 4-6 pustulose ridges, and a pustulose basal ridge separates from atrium; sheath around entire penis; penis base protrudes into atrium; short vagina; rounded spermatheca larger than dart sac; spermatheca duct wider than oviduct and slightly narrowing toward spermatheca; atrium about length of penis, and glandular surface around lower half; no accessory retractor muscle attached to atrium (Fairbanks 1993).
Relative to P. bisdosus, P. viginicus has a thinner vas deferens; thicker penis; stronger penial retractor muscle; longer, wider dart sac; larger vagina (Branson 1969). Relative to P. flexuolaris and P. carolinianus, P. virginicus is browner and with chevron patterns (Hubricht 1953).
Juveniles: brown-gray mantle patterns (Hubricht 1953).
50-100 mm long (Burch 1962); to 100 mm long extended (Hubricht 1953).
west part of Virginia and West Virginia (Hubricht 1985).
Found co-occuring with P. flexuolaris and P. carolinianus (Hubricht 1953).
Upland forest (Hubricht 1985); under bark of dead trees (Fairbanks 1993).
